AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud: Which Is Right for Your Small Business?

There is no single best cloud for every small business. As a rule of thumb, Microsoft Azure fits best if your company already runs on Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Windows Server; AWS fits best if you want the broadest service catalog and the largest pool of third-party tools and talent; and Google Cloud fits best if you live in Google Workspace or need strong data and analytics services. All three are secure, reliable and pay-as-you-go. The deciding factors are usually your existing tools, your team's skills and how you want to manage costs.

The three providers at a glance

Factor AWS Microsoft Azure Google Cloud
Natural fit Broad workloads, startups, web apps Microsoft-centric offices Google Workspace users, data and analytics
Identity integration IAM, IAM Identity Center Microsoft Entra ID, shared with Microsoft 365 Cloud Identity, shared with Google Workspace
Windows Server licensing License included or bring your own (with restrictions) Azure Hybrid Benefit for eligible licenses License included or bring your own (with restrictions)
Virtual desktops Amazon WorkSpaces Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 Partner solutions
Discount models Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Spot Reservations, savings plan, Spot VMs Committed use discounts, sustained use, Spot VMs
Nearest major regions to South Florida US East (N. Virginia, Ohio) East US, East US 2 (Virginia) us-east1 (South Carolina)

All three offer free tiers or trial credits, which are useful for testing but rarely reflect production costs.

Microsoft Azure: the natural extension of Microsoft 365

If your staff signs into Microsoft 365 every morning, you already have an Azure tenant through Entra ID. That makes Azure a straightforward next step:

  • Single sign-on and Conditional Access policies extend to cloud servers and apps.
  • Azure Hybrid Benefit can reduce costs if you own eligible Windows Server or SQL Server licenses with Software Assurance.
  • Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 give remote staff a full Windows desktop.
  • Device management through Microsoft Intune sits in the same ecosystem.

For many South Florida professional offices, such as accounting, legal and medical practices, Azure is the least disruptive path.

AWS: the broadest catalog

AWS has the largest selection of services and a very large ecosystem of partners, documentation and experienced engineers. It is a strong choice when:

  • You host customer-facing web applications or SaaS products.
  • You want many managed options, such as databases, queues, serverless functions and storage tiers.
  • Your developers already know AWS tooling.

The trade-off is that the sheer number of options can be overwhelming without a clear architecture and good cost controls.

Google Cloud: data, analytics and simplicity

Google Cloud is often praised for a clean console and strong data services such as BigQuery. It fits well when:

  • Your company runs on Google Workspace.
  • Analytics, reporting or machine learning are important to your business.
  • You run containers and want a mature managed Kubernetes service (GKE).

Its sustained-use discounts on some machine types can also simplify cost planning for steady workloads.

Do not forget the alternatives

Hyperscale clouds are not always the most economical home for steady, predictable workloads. A website, a small database or an application server that runs 24/7 at constant load may be better served by a dedicated or virtual server from a provider such as OVHcloud, with Cloudflare in front for DNS, caching and protection. A hybrid approach, keeping some systems on-premises on Proxmox and moving others to the cloud, is also common and perfectly valid.

How to choose: a short checklist

  1. List your workloads: email, file sharing, line-of-business apps, websites, databases, backups.
  2. Map your identity system: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace usually points the way.
  3. Check software requirements: some vendors certify specific clouds or need Windows licensing in a particular form.
  4. Estimate traffic and storage, including data transfer out (egress), which is often overlooked.
  5. Decide who will manage it: in-house staff, a partner, or both.
  6. Start small: pilot one workload, measure cost and performance, then expand.

FAQ

Is one cloud provider more secure than the others?

All three invest heavily in security and hold major compliance certifications. In practice, most cloud security incidents come from misconfiguration on the customer side, such as open storage buckets or weak access policies, so how you configure the platform matters more than which one you pick.

Can I use more than one cloud?

Yes, and many businesses do, for example Microsoft 365 with Azure for identity and AWS for a web application. Just keep the architecture simple enough for your team to manage and monitor.

Will moving to the cloud lower my IT costs?

Sometimes. The cloud removes hardware purchases and can scale with demand, but steady workloads running around the clock can cost more than owned or dedicated hardware. A proper assessment compares both options for your specific workloads.
